What we do in Old Fourth Ward

Old Fourth Ward includes ponce city market

The Old Fourth Ward (O4W) neighborhood in Atlanta is a vibrant and historic district that encapsulates the essence of the city’s rich cultural heritage. Spanning roughly 2 square miles just east of downtown Atlanta, the Old Fourth Ward has undergone significant revitalization in recent years, transforming from a neglected area to one of the city’s trendiest and most desirable neighborhoods.

One of the defining features of the Old Fourth Ward is its deep historical significance. This neighborhood played a pivotal role in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s and is perhaps best known as the birthplace of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He grew up in the Sweet Auburn district, which is part of the Old Fourth Ward, and his childhood home, along with the Ebenezer Baptist Church where he preached, are now preserved as part of the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site. Visitors from around the world come to pay homage to Dr. King’s legacy and learn about the struggles and triumphs of the Civil Rights Movement.

Beyond its historical importance, the Old Fourth Ward is also celebrated for its diverse and vibrant community. It is a melting pot of cultures, with residents from various backgrounds coming together to create a dynamic and inclusive atmosphere. The neighborhood’s streets are lined with a mix of historic homes, modern condominiums, and trendy apartments, attracting young professionals, artists, and families alike.

One of the most significant developments in the Old Fourth Ward in recent years has been the transformation of the Atlanta BeltLine. Originally a network of old railway corridors encircling the city, the BeltLine has been reimagined as a multi-use trail system connecting neighborhoods, parks, and commercial areas. The Eastside Trail, which runs through the heart of the Old Fourth Ward, has become a popular destination for joggers, cyclists, and pedestrians. Along the trail, visitors can enjoy stunning views of the Atlanta skyline, as well as access to local shops, restaurants, and art installations.

In addition to the BeltLine, the Old Fourth Ward boasts an eclectic mix of dining, entertainment, and cultural attractions. The Ponce City Market, housed in a historic Sears, Roebuck & Co. building, is a bustling hub of activity featuring an array of shops, restaurants, and offices. Visitors can sample cuisine from around the world, browse local boutiques, or simply soak in the vibrant atmosphere.

For those interested in the arts, the Old Fourth Ward offers plenty of options. The Atlanta Contemporary Art Center showcases cutting-edge contemporary artwork from local and international artists, while the Historic Fourth Ward Park is home to a striking sculpture by renowned artist Jaume Plensa. Additionally, the neighborhood hosts regular events such as the Old Fourth Ward Arts Festival, which celebrates the creativity and talent of local artists and musicians.

Despite its rapid gentrification and development, the Old Fourth Ward has managed to retain much of its historic charm and character. Historic landmarks such as the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site and the Sweet Auburn Curb Market serve as reminders of the neighborhood’s rich heritage, while new developments blend seamlessly with the old, creating a unique blend of past and present.

However, the rapid pace of development in the Old Fourth Ward has also raised concerns about affordability and gentrification. As property values continue to rise, longtime residents risk being priced out of the neighborhood, threatening the area’s socio-economic diversity and sense of community. Activists and community leaders are working to address these issues through initiatives aimed at preserving affordable housing and promoting equitable development.

In conclusion, the Old Fourth Ward neighborhood in Atlanta is a vibrant and culturally rich district that embodies the spirit of the city. From its storied history as the birthplace of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to its dynamic mix of art, culture, and cuisine, the Old Fourth Ward offers something for everyone. As the neighborhood continues to evolve, it is essential to balance progress with preservation, ensuring that the Old Fourth Ward remains a welcoming and inclusive community for generations to come.

Why should I get Inspected?

You’re going to want a chimney inspection to protect your home, wallet and peace of mind. Being proactive and scheduling an annual check-up for your chimney and fireplace will save you money in the long run.

Schedule Online

It’s quick and easy to set up a chimney or fireplace inspection. Send us an email or fill out our online form and we will get back with you to find the best time for your appointment.

Prevent Chronic Issues and Costly Repairs

If excessive water falls into your chimney, it can get into the chimney flue or the chimney liner, which will cause rapid deterioration. Debris and animals are also a major concern that impact your chimney. Just as your gutters collect debris and water, your chimney does that same; and it only takes a small amount of debris and a heated chimney to create a fire hazard.

Chimney Cleanings

Keep your chimney safe and functioning correctly; schedule your appointment in time for winter!

Most Importantly

Chimney Installs

Get started by determining what type of chimney and fireplace you have in your home

Masonry Chimneys & Fireplaces

Masonry Chimney and Fireplaces are part of a home’s structural design and are built as the house is built. Masonry fireplaces burn wood logs and a concrete foundation is necessary for a fireplace. There are specific requirements when building the home that dictate various aspects of the unit.

Pre-Fab Chimneys & Fireplaces

Pre-fabricated Chimney and Fireplaces are built in such a way that they can typically be installed just inches away from combustible materials.  Most are constructed of metal and have glass doors, insulated walls, air-cooled pipes, and blowers which can move the heat produced by the fire into the room.
